UK community day – UK user groups get together

I’m really impressed with the way that the User group community has pulled together in the UK and are holding their 2nd community event at Microsoft campus on Thursday 21st June (the longest day of the year by the way).  Registration for the event is done through the UKusergroups site.

We’ve been trying to think of something that links all of the IT pro user groups together, the Developers have DDD day  (Developer, Developer, Developer), but “Prozone” sounded a bit like a toilet cleaner, so without a catchy name for the event, we were stuck at the first hurdle really.  So thank goodness the groups have decided on a sensible name.   Community day means  exactly what it’s supposed to, no fancy branding, marketing or anything like that.  just what user groups really want.    Chris, who runs the Live meeting user group has said he’s planning to stream the whole thing using Live meeting so hopefully you’ll be able to join in wherever you happen to be in the world, and he’s also having his first virtual user group meeting tomorrow at 4pm GMT (have a look here to register…).

Nathan will also follow up with another meeting of the messaging and mobility user group on 11th July (see here for details).

So I was harping on about how fantastic the logo for the vista squad was recently, but now I’ve seen all the logo’s on the site side by side I’ve changed my mind.  for me, it’s got to be the total simplicity of the Unified Communications logo.

So which is your favourite – and why?…

Exchange 2003 calendar connector for Lotus Notes

Hare’s another tool if you’re migrating from Lotus Notes to Exchange 2003.  Useful to add to the other tools I blogged about recently.  The Calendar Connector for Lotus Notes is a tool designed for organizations that need to coexist during a migration from Lotus Domino to Microsoft Exchange Server 2003.

Useful stuff – as the calendar information is something you need to keep accessible at all times as you migrate your clients over…

Hallam Foe

I left my world of chickens and kittens yesterday (I was working from home) to go into London and watch a pre-screening of the film Hallam FoeHugh kindly invited a load of really creative and arty people and some Microsoftees including Tony, who managed to get very uncomfortable about some of the themes raised in the film, as did Bruce and Steve (who’s seen the film before of course).  After the film we listened to an interesting discourse about the film, the film blog and how the blogosphere can help marketers get the word around to the people who really matter – targeted marketing.  Then off for drinks and canapes round the corner in Soho.   It’s nice to get out and mingle with non IT folks for a while, gives me a totally different perspective.

I can really get used to this…

More best of MMS coming to the UK

It’s good that the UK are keen to find out more about windows management.  We’re putting on more dates in the UK for the best of MMS events that we ran earlier this year…

SharePoint utilities: "filling in the gaps"

I found this interesting resource on a newsletter now that I’m starting to deal with the hundreds of mails in my inbox.  I thought this was worth sharing.  We get a lot of feedback from people who install SharePoint and then don’t know where to start to create a good quality site.  There are a fair few utilities here for you to have a play with.

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS 2007)  Features, tools and utilities supporting Forms Based Authentication.  Here is where you’ll find MOSS Features, tools and utilities that fill in the gaps the SharePoint product group left behind.

SharePoint Tips Utility Pack is a package of utilities for the administrator\ developer\ deployer of SharePoint 2007 and WSSv3.
Originally each tool was written to quickly solve a specific problem in a SharePoint deployment project, it can now be viewed as a code sample for SharePoint coding on various tasks.
It includes:

  • A tool to recursively delete sites
  • A tool to create a list in multiple sites at once
  • A tool to modify field settings – some internal settings that you cannot modify in the regular interface, and the option to modify lists with the same name in multiple sites at once
  • A tool to push a web part to multiple sites (a specific page in each site) at once
  • (in beta) a tool to manage list event handlers (register and remove event handlers from lists)

Useful tools to add to your SharePoint site…

Luggage labels

I’ve just ordered my personalised luggage labels from the KLM website.  I saw that Steve has the Blue Monster on his and I wanted some too.  All bags seem so alike at the moment that I wanted something to stand out from the rest (taking a dive bag on non dive trips seems to work well too).

Why am I blogging this?  Well I was pleased to note that this offer isn’t only available in the US like so many of our own offers.  This one is only available in the UK :-).

But, as I’m kind, if you want some and don’t live in the UK, just get them posted to me at my office (contact me for the details), I’ll forward them on to you.

So, I’m changing the world – just a little bit…

View pdf’s in Outlook preview pane

Ever since I’ve been testing Office 2007 I’ve loved that I can preview office documents in Outlook and frustrated by the fact that I can’t preview pdf’s without opening the attachment completely.  Well Tim (who “just likes writing code”) has worked with Foxit to come up with a pdf viewer for Outlook which you can download here.  I finally got around to downloading it and am kicking myself for not installing it weeks ago…

James has been talking about pdf’s (or not) in Outlook and has been raving about this for a while now, so I’ve finally got around to getting this out to a wider audience.

I know it only saves you a click or two but its a great add on to Outlook.  Go on, give it a go..

How we name products

Damn, this is a catchy tune.  The concept makes me smile too.  I’ve sat around in loads of  brainstorming meetings coming up with precisely nothing 🙂

Little video about how Windows Server Longhorn got it’s new name
